Fire Pit Care 101

Today, many homeowners are investing in their outdoor space just as much as their indoor space. With a focus on outdoor entertaining, homeowners have made their outdoor space cozy with outdoor kitchens, large decks, and high quality fencing. Fire-pits fit right in, making outdoor living spaces welcoming and relaxing for everyone.

Fire pit care can be just as easy as making s’mores. The essentials to fire pit care can be remembered with three easy words: cleaning, covering, and temperature.

Cleaning:

The cleaning methods used on fire pits can differ based upon the type of fire pit you have. Most fire pits are either made of: copper, cast iron, steel or metal, stone, or gas. Most of these allow for cleaning with soap and water however for stone fire pits a solution including muriatic acid and water is advisable. Gas fire pits are very easy to maintain and simply require that the burners are kept clean and that the gas lines are checked regularly for proper operation. Wood burning fire pits do require a bit more attention to ensure ashes and remnants are removed as to not create more debris.

Covering

A well-fitting cover for your pit will help protect your fire pit from the rain and moisture. There are a variety of covers to choose from including canvas, vinyl, and stainless steel. Considering our rainy summers in Central Florida, a proper cover would be a wise investment in order to keep your pit in spectacular shape. A cover will also help keep your fire pit clean and free of debris.

Temperature

Although we do not get severe drops in temperature in Central Florida, it is still a best practice to gradually increase the temperatures when using your fire pit. It is advisable to play it safe and increase the temperature moderately rather than cranking up the flames immediately.
