May the Force Be With Our Flowers: Five Flowers that Can Withstand the Florida Heat

If there is one phrase that is used multiple times in May it is the “May the Fourth be with you”; in Florida, there is also another frequently used phrase in May and beyond which is “man it’s hot out here”. With May we get heat and in great force. With that in mind, we want to make sure your outdoor living space is equipped with not only the furnishings for a fun summer but also with flourishing flowers that can withstand the summer heat.

We’ve compiled a list of the top five flowers that not only can withstand the Florida heat but that also have some really cool names to go along with it.

  1. Lantana: This flower is a Florida native. There is even a city in Florida named after it. These little beauties bloom all throughout the year in bright bold colors like orange, purple, yellow, and pink. These flowers are sure to be winners all year round. They can bloom in flower beds and in your garden. Whether you plant them near your front porch area or backyard near the garden area, Lantanas are ready for the Florida heat.
  2. Blanket Flower: What is Linus from The Peanuts favorite flower? At least we didn’t write a whole top five jokes blog. These flowers are also known as Gallardias and look similar to the delightful daisies many of us are used to seeing at the flower shop. These blanket flowers pop up in colors like yellow and peach and can bloom easily from seeds in the summer heat. Although these flowers are safe in general, they wouldn’t be ideal for a pet-friendly backyard but would be great for a flower bed near the front porch.
  3. Hibiscus: We cannot have a top five flower list for Florida and not include our hummingbird’s favorite flower the hibiscus. These beautiful flowers add a pop of vibrant and colorful beauty to any location they are planted. These tropical flowers are perfect for the Florida heat and bring a nice tropical feel to any home. Plant these near your pool space or near and around your lanai for a true tribute to the space.
  4. Firespike: Another favorite of the hummingbird, these cool looking flowers do great in the heat as well. After all, they do have the word fire in their name. It is best to plant the shrubs in the spring because they do bloom beautifully with pops of red or purple in the summer. Firespike flowers are a unique addition to any space and can be awesome additions to a butterfly garden or near a kid friendly garden in your backyard space.
  5. Egyptian Starflower: Our May the force theme would not be complete if we did not include a flower with the word star in it. For our final pick on the list we have a very cool looking and resilient flower the Pentas Lanceolata otherwise known as the Egyptian starflower. These tiny but mighty flowers are tiny star shaped flowers that grow all together forming a cool sphere of color which are sure to be a delight to all who visit the home or stroll on by in the neighborhood.
