What is a Florida Room? Celebrating the Origin of a Timeless Room

Dating back to the 1950’s Florida rooms were created across America celebrating the tropical sunny days in Florida. Today, these bright and sunny rooms can be seen as sunrooms or enclosed porches and can add tremendous value to your Central Florida home.

Origin: The actual origin of the sunroom can be traced all the way back to medieval Italy. These rooms with large windows and access to beautiful natural light were originally designed based on concepts for greenhouses and botanical gardens. It comes to no surprise that later on when home designers wanted to create an extension of the home that captured sunlight they looked to sunrooms for inspiration. The name of these coveted rooms was named after the very gorgeous place we call home, Florida.

Concept: Florida rooms were created as home improvement projects from the 1950’s and beyond because they were a space to cultivate outdoor living without the reality of mosquitos and bugs flying around. These Florida rooms were attached portions of the home that allowed for plenty of sunlight and natural air, many of them were built with large glass, which would be considered more of a sunroom today and other Florida room concepts were built with screens which could be considered like a lanai today. Over the years Florida rooms have evolved and can even have retractable screens.

Adding Value to the American Home: The name Florida room was a key indicator of a home that had a mini oasis space. All across the U.S. people began adding Florida rooms to their home in the hopes of adding more outdoor access without being at the mercy of weather. The idea of bringing warm Florida weather, tropical palm trees, and the feeling of relaxation to the homes in the northeast as well as across the U.S., was a huge appeal. The appeal continues to this day.

The allure of having access to tropical warm weather, relaxing atmospheres of large green spaces and beautiful scenery all year round is the desire for many. For those of us living in the Central Florida area, we can not only have a Florida home but we still can and should bring the concept of the Florida room to our home. These rooms add more square footage of functional living space to our homes as well as the ability to enjoy the benefits of outdoor time regardless of the weather or any other element of nature. They make for great offices, study rooms, relaxation spots, and places to simply enjoy life which is why they, to this day, add value to homes.
