Backyard BBQ and Friends: Exploring The History Behind this Classic Timeless Tradition

From the 4th of July to Memorial Day and everywhere in between there seems to be a tradition of bringing out the grill on special days–and this isn’t just in Central Florida where it is warm all year round! Grilling in the backyard has a history rooted in traditions from around the world and perhaps it is a way to continue a deeply understood connection between friends from various backgrounds.

So what is the history of backyard BBQs in America?

According to the National Museum of American History, the beginning of outdoor barbecues began after World War II in the 1950s when more Americans began traveling outside of the U.S. to the Pacific Islands, the Caribbean, Mexico, and, believe it or not, Florida. Yes, even Florida played a role in opening up the taste buds and customs for this outdoor living fun.

Recreation & Re-creation:

Upon returning home from these adventures abroad, Americans decided to try to create similar experiences in their own backyards at home. From building patios to outdoor grilling spaces, the love for outdoor barbecues began. The patio gained popularity by the late 1950s and grilling continued to grow in the 60s until this day.

Today, much of that barbecue history from the 50s and 60s remains strong. In fact, we continue to bring in elements from the Pacific Islands in our outdoor living spaces. One in particular, is the lanai a space with origins in Hawaii. Whether you grill in a summer kitchen or enjoy backyard games while you sip on island cocktails, chances are you probably bring in some pieces of the authentic backyard BBQ traditions in America.

One thing still remains true for all of us here in Central Florida, our outdoor living spaces and great hospitality are still applauded by many. To get started on an outdoor living space project today Contact U.S. Aluminum at 407-237-3128.
