When Did People Start Having Pools At Home? Exploring The History Of Pools In The United States And Central Florida

It is an almost undeniable fact, most homeowners in Central Florida have pools as a priority when thinking about their outdoor living space. We’ve all seen those blue squares and circles attached to homes from up above when flying into Central Florida. This tropical climate calls for delights like a personal swimming pool in the home or, at the very least, near the home.

When exactly did swimming pools become popular in homes in the United States? The first public swimming pool was built in 1887 in Brookline, Massachusetts. This was created as a gathering point for people during the summer months. The very first residential swimming pool was built in Asheville, North Carolina in 1895. After the very first pool, more families followed.

During the early years of implementing residential swimming pools there were no specific pool contractors so pools were built by different contractors including general contractors, road contractors, and concrete contractors. In the past, swimming pools were more labor intensive than today. Pools were made out of concrete or concrete blocks and they were usually dug out by hand.

After World War II many men and women in the country came back from the war with the ability to swim. With that new skill combined with the ability to purchase a home with the GI bill, many began building homes and adding swimming pools to the backyard outdoor living space.

It wasn’t until after the Korean War that things really took off and the pool industry boomed. Owning a pool became more popular in states with tropical climates like California and Florida and pool construction companies began to grow. Pools in the backyard were increasingly available for upper and middle class families.

Advancements in plumbing and construction materials were made throughout the 60s, 70s, and 80s, and then in the 1990s, customer input began to be a factor in the development of the home swimming pool. Feedback regarding pool safety and other details were implemented and now we can find swimming pools of all shapes and sizes to suit your needs.
